Trump Tries a New Approach to the Conflict With Iran

For weeks, U.S. President Donald Trump has tried to push for positive developments in relations with Iran, but with little success.

On August 18, he appeared to shift to a new approach. According to U.S. officials, Trump instructed senior administration envoys to temporarily suspend communications with Iran.

Sources familiar with the matter said White House officials have also recently told political allies that they are changing strategy, moving away from trying to change Iran “immediately” toward containing it over time.

Instead of continuing to insist that negotiations were progressing well and that a new agreement was close — something Trump had repeatedly claimed since a ceasefire reached in June collapsed — he now declared that no diplomatic activity was taking place at all.

“There are no talks or communications taking place or scheduled with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote on social media. “The naval blockade remains fully in effect. The Strait of Hormuz is open and operating. All mines have been removed or detonated. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

In reality, however, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains at very low levels, while vessels traveling through this crucial maritime route continue to come under attack from Iranian munitions and missiles.
